So, this is my blog! I should say at the outset, I AM NOT A WRITER! I have never been a writer and I’ve known this since, when in my final year of school, my teacher said ‘Aoife, you have terrible syntax and sentence structure and there is nothing we can do to fix that now, so let’s focus on other things’! In conclusion, if you are reading this, I apologise in advance for my poor spelling and grammar. On the other hand, screw it… I’m not aiming for a publication!
I have decided that 2013 is THE year: The year I stop doing what I think I should do and start doing what I want to do; the year I conquer the fear and throw myself into the things; the year find out what I actually like doing!
Where has this new found energy and enthusiasm for self-discovery come from? I dip in and out of a few blogs generally focused on fitness, self improvement and food. In the midst of my mid-twenties crisis (Why, despite achieving everything in my 5 year plan, do I feel so fed up and bored with life?!) I was reading Nichole Antoinette’s blog (check it out… http://www.lifelessbullshit.com/ she’s awesome!) for some inspiration and stumbled across this article: Is Obsession a Prerequisite for Success? By Scott Young (http://www.scotthyoung.com/blog/2011/07/13/obsession/). It is by the way! That got me thinking, what would I like to get obsessed about?
I have been very career focused since my undergrad. In final year, I devised a 5 year plan with key goals that would ensure successful progression in my career and I have focused on achieving each of those goals with unrelenting ambition. Now, here I am, nearing the end of that 5 year period, a little bored with my chosen career and no idea of what other things I enjoy doing. I love many parts of my job and field but one discovery I have made in the last few years is that my career is not enough to make me feel like I have a happy and full life.
So, I have made a list of things I want to get obsessed with over the next couple of years, to see if I enjoy them and if I can get better at them. No more excuses or reasons why now is not the right time. There have been things I have half-heartedly dipped in and out of over the last couple of years which I want to really dive into this year.
This blog is a record of my exploration into my obsessions. I hope that by writing this blog I’ll have a better idea of what makes me tick and what gets me excited to get up in the morning! For the moment, those obsessions will focus generally around the areas of food, fitness and travel with a few posts about what other wiser folk say about finding happiness. Most blog writing guides say you should find a niche for your blog to ensure maximum readership. But, like I said, this is the year of doing WHAT I WANT TO DO, not what I should do.
So here it is, my blog about me and my obsessions.
